International Women’s Day Events

The 8th of March is International Women’s Day. It is a day to celebrate women of all kinds and to fight against gender inequalities.

According the International Women’s Day website, “Colour trendsetter Pantone has selected ‘ultra-violet’ as its 19th ‘Colour of the Year’ to communicate ‘originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.’ Purple is historically associated with efforts to achieve gender equality. In this context it was first used alongside green and white as the colours of the Women’s Social and Political Union, the organisation that led Britain’s women’s suffrage movement in the early 20th century.”

We proudly have purple as our main logo colour and see ourselves as supportive of women’s issues throughout the year. One of our partners, Nisa-Nashim, is an excellent organisation that brings together Jewish and Muslim women.

We find that women are instrumental in community cohesion projects. While there still tend to be more men in decision-making roles in faith organisations, women are often the ones doing most of the grassroots work that makes things happen. On this International Women’s Day, we’d like to share several selected events that we are supporting around the country. Consider yourself invited!

Women Equality and Faith

A day conference exploring issues of gender equality in faith spaces and the interfaith arena.

This is a conference open to women and men from all faiths and none who want to see everyone able to participate fully in faith communities. It is the start of a conversation but we hope it is not the end. We know what is said will be interesting but we hope it leads to action and transformation for individuals and communities. So please come, to talk, to listen, to reflect, to respond, to change and to challenge. All are welcome.

Women's Journeys

Birmingham Museums is delighted to partner with Near Neighbours for our third event celebrating Birmingham Women on International Women’s Day.

This year's programme features stories of 'Women's Journeys'. Civilization has been shaped by the movement of people, and women throughout history have journeyed across the globe seeking better lives for themselves and their families. We celebrate and share these stories through this special event.
